FreeTime Pro Timecode Calculator

FreeTime Pro

Ever wonder what 5 minutes divided by 23 frames is?

FreeTime Pro can answer that question and a million other timecode/edgecode arithmetic questions. FreeTime can add, subtract, divide and multiply any one of a number of different timecode/edgecode formats. All calculations are performed in frame counts so they are accurate to the frame. Any value can be converted (with pulldown and frame-rate conversions) to any other format.

This is the app you need on your Apple iPhone or iPod Touch for timecode calculations.

Simple Mode

Screen snapshot
  • Works like a regular calculator: enter digits (a timecode), press + and enter more digits. Equals will show the answer.
  • Touch the format name (PAL in this example) to switch the time shown to another timecode or edgecode format. Any frame-rate conversion required will be performed. For example, if you enter one minute, 5 seconds in NTSC Drop-Frame, it will be converted to 97 feet and 6 frames in 35mm film, by assuming 3:2 pulldown.
Conversion Mode

Conversion Mode Screen snapshot In addition to a conventional calculator mode, there are two other entry modes, Conversion mode and Editor mode.
  • Facilitates repeated conversions between two different timecode formats.
  • Two entry fields, instead of just one. Each may be set to a different time format, and either may be selected to be active for user input and operations (shown with box).
  • All usual operations can be performed on either field, and result is shown in both formats.
  • Just tap on either number to switch which one changes when you enter numbers.
Editor Mode

Editing Screen snapshot
  • Three input fields: In, Out and Duration.
  • Enter either two fields and the third field is calculated. For example, you can enter a in-point and a duration. The out-point will be displayed automatically.
  • Out-point can become the next in-point with a single touch (use the arrow symbols between In and Out).
  • Auto-calculation of in/out/dur may be disabled, for complex what-ifs.
  • Just press the Auto button to switch which field is auto calculated. Press again to disable any auto calc.
Additional features

Setting Screen snapshot
  • Supported timecode formats: Drop Frame, NTSC-ND (Non-drop), PAL, NTSC frames, PAL frames, Film frames (24 fps), 30fps frames, Real-time, 16mm, 35mm, 16mm/20 (20 frames per keycode, a.k.a foot). More formats may be defined in the future.
  • Conversion to and from real-time (seconds or milliseconds resolution) is provided.
  • Overflow fields may be (optionally) set to carry-up automatically. This allows you to enter 90 frames and have it converted silently to one minute and 30 frames (NTSC example).
  • Bump-up dropped: Disables the helpful warning about dropped-frame entry errors. The next legal frame number is provided automatically.
  • A tapping sound is optional.
  • Go to Home -> System Settings (Gears) -> FreeTime Pro (bottom) to change settings.
Additional Notes

  • This program was written by the same author as FreeTime, a freeware program for the Palm Pilot, released in 1998. Every ten years there is a worthwhile mobile platform... But now I have three kids to feed, hence the Pro name and small fee.
  • A number of long-standing arithmetic errors have been fixed. These errors were all drop-frame related.
